Harold “Hal” Young passed away at his family residence in Lake Oswego, Oregon, on Friday, April 28th, 2017. He was surrounded by his family when he passed.
Hal was born in Belvedere, California, on December 29th, 1929 shortly before moving to Portland where he was raised by his parents, Jodie and Lilly (Thoreson) Young. Hal graduated from Portland’s Jefferson High in 1948 and entered the United States Air force in 1950. Transferred overseas in 1951, Hal was in charge of commercial transportation for USAF on Waddington AF base near Lincoln City, England.
Hal returned home to Portland in 1954 and shortly after went to work for Retail Credit Union. Not for him, he quit soon thereafter, but not before meeting the love of his life- LaDonna Zade. Hal and LaDonna married in 1957 and lived in Portland while Hal attended Portland State University earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, graduating in 1960. They moved to Lake Oswego’s First Addition neighborhood shortly after when Hal received his first teaching job at Lake Oswego’s Forrest Hill’s Elementary. After six years, he transferred to the newly built Bryant Elementary where he spent all but one of his remaining years in the school district. All total, he spent thirty-one years in the Lake Oswego School District- six at Forest Hills, twenty-four at Bryant, and one as vice principal of Lake Grove Elementary.
Hal was a golf and music enthusiast, both passions beginning in his youth. He was a member of the Jefferson High School golf team and remained true to his passion for the sport until he had to give up the game sometime in the mid 1990’s due to various injuries. His love for music was in part due to his singing for local dances in the Portland area appearing with vocal luminaries such as Johnny Ray. His favorite musicians were the Glenn Miller Orchestra and Frank Sinatra.
Possessing a fantastic sense of humor and friendly demeanor, LaDonna often remarked that her husband never met a stranger. He took refuge in comedic movies and television shows and was well-known for his love of the 1960’s sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. Ultimately, Hal was all about family. He married once and remained married to his beloved bride for 60 years until his passing.
Hal is survived by his wife LaDonna, sons Steve, Jeff, Patrick (wife Allison), daughter Amy Howard (husband Scott), and his four grandchildren, Priya Young Domfeh (husband Phillip), Tyler Young, Ellie Howard, and Regan Howard.
